In memory of Professor Sabit Kalfagil
Professor Doctor Sabit Kalfagil
He was born in 1934 in Elazığ. He graduated from Konya High School and ITU Faculty of Architecture.
He worked in Istanbul Municipality until 1980. He served as a urban planning director, mayor advisor,
deputy mayor.
His first encounter with photography was in 1960 at the level of hobby. His works which at first were
documenting the works of architecture and archeology gradually turned out to be a mission to witness
the Anatolian people, nature and culture. He made many trips to Anatolia. These photographs were
presented in many national and international, personal and mixed exhibitions and were awarded in
competitions.
His photographs were displayed in several mixed exhibitions both at home and abroad. In 1972 and
1988 he opened two personal exhibitions.
Photography, which was his hobby at first, became his second profession over time. He continued to
do this in field of education. In 1978 he was one of the founders of the Photography Institute of Fine
Arts Academy.
He worked as a part-time instructor until 1989. In 1989, he became associate professor and became
the Head of Documentary Photography Art Department at Mimar Sinan University Fine Arts Faculty
Department of Photography. In 1993, he prepared a 9-part documentary for the TRT with Kamil Fırat,
“Anatolia in the Pursuit of Light”.
In 1998, he was appointed Professor of Photography at Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty. He served
as Head of the Main Art Branch in this department.
He was a honorary member of Professional Promotional Photographers Association and İFSAK
He held a mirror to Istanbul and Anatolia with the photographs he took. He won many national and
international awards. The artist, who was 83 years old, with the Grand Prize of Culture and Art, lost his
life on 05.05.2017.
