“Bu dağın yüksekliği dünyanın bu kısmında o kadar fazla ve olağandışıdır ki, yöre halkı ona
hayret ve dehşetle bakıyor ve bir çok efsaneyi de onunla ilişkilendiriyor. Kendi deyimleriyle, ova
ortasındaki can sıkıcı boşluğu doldurmak için rehberler bana bu efsanelerden birkaçını anlattılar.
Belki de eskilerin ejderhası ile aynı kökene sahip olan büyük bir yılan, bu efsanelerin hepsinde önemli bir

yere sahiptir. Bu yılan, kötü bir ruhun faaliyetlerine işaret etmek için ortaya konmuş olabilir. Duyduğum
ilk efsane Orta Çağ’da yaşayan, Bizanslılara karşı savaşan ve bütün komşularıyla savaş etmiş olan Battal
Gazi nâmında bir Türk cengaveriyle ilgiliydi. O, büyülü bir hayat sürmüş ve hiçbir silah onu yaralayamamış
veya imha edememiştir. En sonunda esir alınmış ve Erciyes Dağı’nın tepesine götürülmüştür. Burada derin
bir kuyuya atılmış ama bir yılanın yardımıyla, bu kuyudan kurtulmuştur. Başka bir efsane de şu şekildedir:
Zamanın birinde Frenk ülkesinden bir seyyah, sadece Erciyes Dağı’nın tepesinde büyüyen,
sapının etrafında on yaprak ve ortasında bir çiçek bulunan bir bitkiyi bulmak üzere buraya
gelmiştir. Burada bu bitkinin yirmi dört saat içerisinden bir saat uyuyan tetikte bir yılan tara-
fından korunduğu söylenir. Seyyah yola işaret ederek, kendisine refakat etmeleri için yerli halk-

tan bir kaçını ikna etmeye çalışmışsa da, hiç birisi bu maceraya girmek istemez ve o sonunda
tırmanışını tek başına gerçekleştirir. Ancak yılanı gafil avlama teşebbüsünde başarısız olur.
Hikâye, efsanenin daha sonra kitap haline dönüştürülmüş bir vaziyette bulunduğunu, Kayseri’ye
getirildiğini ve tekrar Frenk ülkesine döndüğünü de ilave etmektedir”.

“The height of this mountain is so much and unusual in this part of the world that the locals look at it
with amazement and horror and associate many legends with it. In their own words, the guides told
me some of these myths to fill the annoying gap in the middle of the plain.
Perhaps a great snake with the same roots as the dragons of the ancients has an important place in all
of these myths. This snake may have been put out to point to the activities of a bad soul. The first legend
I heard was about a Turkish Cypriot living in the Middle Ages, Battal Ghazi who fought against the
Byzantines and fought with all their neighbours. He has lived a magical life, and no weapon has injured
or destroyed it. Finally, the prisoner was taken to the top of Erciyes mountain. It is thrown into a deep
hole here, but with the help of a snake, it has escaped this well. Another legend is this:
At one time, a traveler from the country of French came here to find a plant that grew on the top of
Mount Erciyes, with ten leaves around his stalk and a flower in the middle. It is said here that this plant

is guarded by a snake in the twenty–four hour watch that sleeps for an hour. Although the traveller
has tried to persuade a couple of local people to accompany him by pointing to the road, no one wants
to enter this adventure, and he eventually climbs alone. However, he fails unsuccessfully in attempting
to hunt the snake. The story adds that it was later converted into a book, that it was brought to Kayseri
and returned to the country of French “.
